Laser hair removal directs light toward pigment in the hair. The absorbed energy is converted to heat and can damage structures involved in hair growth. Because hairs are not all in the same growth phase at the same time, treatment is performed in a series rather than as a single session.

Why hair color matters

The AAD notes that laser hair removal does not effectively target blonde, white, gray or red hair because these hairs provide too little pigment for conventional pigment-targeting lasers.

Why maintenance may be needed

Regrowth can occur, and at-home treatment generally requires longer use and periodic maintenance. Individual outcomes vary.
